Tinder has launched a new feature it says helps reduce harassment on its app.
The feature uses artificial intelligence to spot potentially abusive messages. It then asks users if they’re sure they want to proceed before they press ‘send’.
Dubbed ‘Are You Sure?’, the feature has already reduced the number of toxic messages sent by 10%, according to Tinder’s early tests.
Members who saw the prompt were less likely to be reported by other users over the next month, the company says.
Users who recieve a potentially abusive message are already shown a ‘Does this bother you?’ prompt, which Tinder says has increased reporting of innapropriate messags by 46%.
How does it work?
Tinder has built its abuse-spotting AI on previous reports of bad behaviour. This means it should be able to recognise the kind of language that’s been flagged as harmful in the past.
A user can still send a message that has been flagged, but the recipient may report them if it’s innapropriate.
Tinder rules say that bad behaviour, including harassment, hate speech and threats are all bannable offenses.
The new feature is already available in English and Japanese Tinder in Japan, US, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, and Ireland.
The company hopes to roll it out to other markets in the coming months.
Making vaccines sexy
The app made headlines Thursday when reports suggested it might be used to persuade young people to get the Covid-19 vaccine.
Government sources told The Telegraph that dating apps could offer users banners that show off the fact they’ve had the jab to potential suitors.
A similar scheme launched Friday in the US, where Tinder users can display stickers saying “I’m Vaccinated” or “Vaccines Save Lives” on their profile.
The stickers then link to vaccine location websites.
