A woman in Australia has shared how she married herself to defy societal expectations that women should marry before 30.
Educator Patricia Christine, 29, from Sydney ended her engagement in 2013 when she realised marrying her fiancé would be a mistake.
Eight years later at the age of 28, Patricia was single and decided she wanted to commit to a future of self-love and growth on her own.
This meant making a long-term commitment to herself and a solo-wedding was the way to do just that.
In preparation for the big day, she purchased a wedding ring, jewellery, sunflowers and a dress. The total cost came to £49 and on May 30, 2020, Patricia said ‘I do.’
Her guests included nine close friends and together they ventured to a local nature park near her home. There her guests read speeches on what self-love means to them. Meanwhile, Patricia made emotional vows to herself in a ceremony that lasted half an hour.
‘I love me despite the mistakes I have made,’ she said in her vows.
‘I commit to being kind to myself and trusting in myself and I commit to following my dreams no matter how big or small.’
Afterwards, Patricia and guests celebrated with a beautiful picnic in the park.
In marrying herself, Patricia wanted to prove you don’t have to get married, have a great career, home and kids by the age of 30. These societal ideals heavily influenced her decision but not everyone was impressed with her choice.
Patricia noted that some congratulated her sarcastically and while these comments upset her, she has realised her life path is different to the norm.
And that is ok.
Patricia is certainly dedicated to herself but said she isn’t ruling out finding a partner in the future.
She believes that focusing on her needs and wants will make her more successful in love.
Thus, leading her to the right person.
