How to do a love tarot and read your own relationship fortune

Tarot is a wonderful tool for self-reflection, questioning, decision-making and gaining insight about a situation that we can’t fathom or understand – and our love lives are ripe territory for all of these needs.

Love-related questions are probably the most commonly asked question of the tarot cards.

With a little practice, you can read your own tarot, discover your own romantic fortune, and become your own Cupid.

Here’s all you need to know.

When to read a love fortune

Friday is ruled by the planet Venus, which influences our love lives and romantic needs and attractions, so Friday is always a great day to read your love fortunes.

Full Moons are a time for heightened emotions and reflection, so they can also be a good time to tap into your own intuition and follow your feelings with tarot.

How to create a tarot spread

A tarot spread is simply the number of cards you’re going to draw, which is determined by how many questions you’re asking. One question equals one card.

The fewer the better, less is more, keep it simple. The more cards you draw, the more messages you’ll get, and pulling it all together into one ‘story’ is a skill and an art, and takes practice.

And, even after 25 years, I won’t pull more than 7 cards in one spread.

A few love spread examples are below…

For a new relationship:

  • What has drawn us together?
  • What do they like best about me?
  • What should we focus on?Where is this heading?

For a struggling relationship:

  • What is the root cause of our issues?
  • What are their true feelings about this relationship now?
  • What can we work on together?
  • Should we stay together long term?

For a past relationship:

  • What drove our split?
  • What do they feel about us now?
  • What can I learn from this?
  • Will we ever rekindle?

How to read your tarot cards for love

Pick your spread, and write it down so it’s on paper and not rumbling in your head. Then shuffle your cards and think about your relationship as you do so. If cards jump or drop out as you do this place them down as your spread. If not, then fan the cards on the floor and pick the ones you feel drawn to or are poking up.

Lay them out in front of you in the order of the spread, and focus on one at a time. Make notes as you go, so you can look back and reflect on the whole thing at the end.

Use your guidebook as you go to look up the card meanings. You will have to exercise a bit of mental gymnastics to bridge the card’s meaning to answer your specific question, but that’s the magic bit, the imaginative leap of faith in all tarot readings.

What you read in the guidebook is unlikely to specifically address the question you’ve asked- you need to interpret it yourself.

The tarot cards to look for

Some cards have really strong, direct messages for love readings. Here are a few – and what they mean:

  • Ten of Swords: Leave, draw a line, cut ties. This is a toxic relationship.
  • Three of Swords: Betrayal, turmoil, pain. End this or extricate yourself from the situation.
  • The Moon: Secrets, illusions, mystery. Ask questions, observe closely, dig.
  • The Empress: Pregnancy, family, children, love. A happy (and growing) home.
  • Ace of Cups: New love! Passion, romance, chemistry, swept off your feet.
  • Two of Cups: A beautiful bond. Loyalty, love and passion.
  • Ten of Cups: Happy ever after together.
  • Ten of Coins: A secure and prosperous nest, a happy home and family.
