Most partners would be pretty peeved if one of them fell in love with someone else, let alone their wedding photographer.
That wasn’t the case, though, for Elizabeth Tidd, 25, and her husband Brandon, 35, from Wisconsin, US, who recently tied the knot with Shannon Elliott, 32.
The throuple – who have a baby together – have been together since 2018, but recently added a fourth member to their polycule after Brandon fell for Jamie Philbrook, 38, the photographer at their three-way wedding.
Brandon and Elizabeth first dipped their toe into polyamory a few years back.
Elizabeth, who is a nurse, said: ‘I never considered a polyamorous relationship before.
‘I had never even explored bisexuality until I met Shannon on a Harry Potter inspired creative writing website.’
After months of texting and video-calling, the couple flew over 450 miles to Shannon’s hometown Ohio, US, for an event.
They spent six months visiting one another before Shannon took the plunge and moved into their marital home.
The three peas in a pod did everything together but didn’t admit their feelings until one drunken night during a game of ‘Truth or Dare’.
‘Shannon and I kissed as a dare, then we did it again the following day,’ said Elizabeth.
‘We both liked it and found ourselves falling for one another. The three of us spent a lot of time romantically so naturally, Brandon developed feelings for Shannon too.’
The trio made their relationship official by Christmas, 2018, tying the knot the following year and having baby Rose just a month after that.
But although they were occupied with cementing their unique relationship on their big day, Brandon couldn’t help but notice the blonde bombshell snapping the photos.
A year later, he began dating Jamie, who is a mother of one, with support from both wives.
Shannon says: ‘Brandon had mutual friends with Jamie so he would often see her at social events.
‘They became friends but he wanted to take it to the next level. He expressed his feelings to us and asked if we would be happy for him to take her on a date.
‘Initially, we didn’t like the idea as we felt jealous and feared he may not have enough time for us all.
But Brandon, who owns a dog training company, proved he has always got time for the special ladies in life – especially his daughter Rose.
The tot will grow up to call both wives (Jamie is not married into the polycule at present) mum, despite being Elizabeth’s biological daughter.
‘It is only natural to feel jealous as we are only human,’ says Elizabeth.
Although Elizabeth and Shannon think Brandon is ‘crazy’ for taking on the extra relationship and the ‘work’ that comes with it, they still believe it’s the best fit for them.
Elizabeth says: ‘People assume it is all about threesomes but it is much deeper than that. We are a hardworking family who is raising a baby together.
‘Jamie and Shannon have become really good friends, I don’t really get much spare time as I am a nurse. But we do things together as a foursome as much as we can.
They have spent holidays such as Christmas and Easter together, with Rose at the forefront. Elizabeth maintains that their unconventional approach gives everyone the best of both worlds.
‘Brandon and I were raised in religious families, we never imagined our life would end up this way,’ she says.
‘But we couldn’t be happier. Rose has got three parents who adore her.
‘Brandon is never short of someone to hang out with as he has three women to choose from.’
Elizabeth has considered adding a boyfriend to the mix if she meets the right person, but Shannon says she’s content to keep things as they are for now.
